An Industry for All with Maleena Awn

The latest installment of Nor-Shipping’s An Industry for All series takes you to Sri Lanka to meet Maleena Awn, Director Operations at Meridian Maritime Services.

An Industry for All has been conceived to showcase some of the amazing individuals helping steer shipping to a more diverse, inclusive and sustainable future.

And Maleena is a true manifestation of that ambition.

With a family history in shipping, an intrinsic connection to the sea, and an impassioned drive for youth empowerment, inclusion and industry development, Maleena is setting a firm course to make a lasting mark in maritime.

Say hello to Maleena, and tap into her energy, insights and inspiration, here:

What is your current role and how long have you had it?

I am Director Operations at Meridian Maritime Services, a Shipping Agency in Sri Lanka providing offshore support services, logistics, vessel lay up and in port services for all types of vessels trading and operating on the east-west shipping lane. I joined the operations division of MMS in 2017.

In addition, I’m a board member of YoungShip International and Chairperson of YoungShip Sri Lanka.

How did you get involved in the maritime industry?

There’s a strong family link to shipping that influenced me from an early age. My father worked as a Chief Officer before transitioning to a shore-based role in the maritime industry, and his stories of life at sea and interactions with partners and customers across the world always captivated me. My mother also had a shore-based maritime position, which was somewhat unconventional at the time, so her experience navigating the industry, and the possibilities for women in the business, really sparked my enthusiasm.

Added into this mix, I always found a great sense of calm and tranquility in the sea and water – a real connection. This led me to pursue sailing as a sport, competing at a national level from a young age. After spending my academic years at the University of St Andrews and Cardiff, I dived right into the industry, whilst continuing to pursue educational development through chartered qualifications. I saw shipping as a natural choice.

Why do you believe people should consider a future within the maritime industry?

In the maritime industry, no two days are the same. Its dynamic nature ensures that every day presents fresh challenges and opportunities, keeping your work engaging and pushing you to continuously develop new skills and adapt to diverse situations.

The maritime sector is also at the forefront of technological advancements and sustainability efforts. This push for innovation creates an environment where you can contribute new ideas, push beyond your boundaries and make a real impact in an industry that moves the world.

If, like me, you also have a taste for adventure, then the maritime industry is also a chance to see the world and gather some incredible stories along the way!

Whether you’re at sea, or working in ports or offices around the globe, this industry immerses you in different cultures, landscapes, and environments—transforming your career into a way of life. In just 10 years, I’ve built lasting friendships and professional connections with colleagues worldwide, enriching both my personal and professional journey.

What key lessons have you learned during your time in the industry, or what advice would you give to others?

One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying resilient. Life in this field is full of exciting opportunities and unexpected twists, and having a resilient mindset helps you embrace both with enthusiasm.

It’s crucial to stay adaptable and persistent, as this not only helps you overcome difficulties but also opens doors to new opportunities and growth.

My advice: Never hesitate to ask questions or share any ideas that come to mind.

What do you think are the industry’s key strengths and weaknesses – how would you like to see it evolve?

In terms of strengths, its international connectivity is key to the efficient movement of goods worldwide. The industry’s focus on digitization is driving modernization and operational improvements through advanced technologies. Innovation remains a core strength, with ongoing developments in automation and sustainable practices. The commitment to sustainability is evident in efforts to reduce environmental impact and promote greener practices and I believe the growing emphasis on inclusivity and diversity is helping to build a more equitable and dynamic workforce.

However, there are notable weaknesses that need addressing. One significant issue is the disparity in knowledge, resources and expertise across different regions and countries, which can lead to uneven standards and practices. Another challenge is the resistance to change, with some areas of the industry slow to embrace new technologies and practices, which can impede progress.

Looking to future evolution, enhancing global collaboration is essential; by improving knowledge-sharing and cooperation across regions, the industry can address expertise gaps and work towards more cohesive practices.

We need to cultivate a culture that embraces innovation and new technologies in order to help overcome resistance to change and drive progress. Maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and expanding diversity will align with global goals and enrich the workforce to better reflect the industry’s global nature.

What do you like best about your current role?

The opportunity to learn something new every day, whether it’s related to maritime operations, management, or personal development. I find great fulfillment in engaging with a variety of activities and projects that, while sometimes stressful, ultimately leave me feeling satisfied when I look back on them.

I’m also extremely passionate about inspiring youth and women to pursue roles in this industry, which adds a meaningful aspect to my work. Plus, the chance to travel and form lasting connections with friends and colleagues worldwide makes my role both rewarding and exciting.

What are your professional ambitions for the next five to ten years?

It would be great to look back and see that I’ve made a positive impact in my own little way. I hope to inspire the next generation by highlighting the amazing opportunities in the maritime industry and fostering a positive attitude toward change and innovation within the workspace and outside.

I also want to demonstrate that a balanced life is achievable, and that prioritization is key in our industry. It’s all about blending meaningful work with a fulfilling personal life, and I’m looking forward to the journey ahead.
