Oslo has been ranked among the five most important maritime cities in the world in the Leading Maritime Cities Report 2024, published by DNV and Menon Economics. The Norwegian capital now ranks just behind Singapore, Rotterdam, London, and Shanghai, surpassing Tokyo for the first time.

The report assesses global maritime hubs across five key categories: shipping, maritime finance and law, maritime technology, ports and logistics, and overall attractiveness and competitiveness. Oslo ranks third in both maritime finance and maritime technology, highlighting its strong position as a centre for innovation, investment, and global shipping expertise.

Home to world-leading shipping banks, maritime companies, insurers, and brokers, Oslo continues to strengthen its role as a financial and technological powerhouse in the maritime sector. The report also points to the city’s increasing importance in driving digital transformation and the shift toward decarbonisation, areas where Oslo is seen as one of the best-prepared cities globally.

With deep maritime roots and a forward-looking industry, Oslo is positioning itself as a key international hub for sustainable growth and innovation in ocean industries. Visit DNV’s website for the full report.

From cutting-edge maritime technology and green innovation to world-class finance, law, engineering, marketing, and logistics, Norway’s ocean industries make up one of the world’s most diverse and interconnected maritime value chains. Yet beyond the visible operations lies a vast ecosystem of expertise, from software development and data analytics to communications, HR, compliance, education, and more.

Our campaign aims to highlight not only the scale and global relevance of the maritime sector, but also the many roles and career paths that make it thrive, and that make it one of Norway’s most important and future-oriented industries.

Launched in Oslo in May 2025, the campaign celebrates the people, companies, and ideas driving sustainable transformation, positioning Norway as a forward-looking maritime nation where talent, tradition, and innovation come together to shape the future of the ocean economy.
