Oslo is going places! The Norwegian capital, and natural home of Nor-Shipping, has moved up the rankings in the latest Leading Maritime Cities of the World (LMC) report, compiled by Menon Economics and classification society DNV. After placing seventh in 2022, Oslo has now climbed to fifth, with Singapore, Rotterdam, London and Shanghai in the top four places.
Leading expertise
Interestingly, given the Nor-Shipping 2025 theme of #Future-proof, ‘maritime technology’ was identified as an area where Oslo excelled, with only Asian hotspots Busan and Singapore ranking higher in the research. Oslo also ranked third globally in ‘finance and law’, with renowned centres London and New York taking first and second respectively.
Tokyo, which previously held overall fifth position, moved down to seventh, with New York following Oslo in sixth.
Quality counts
“Oslo is a comparatively small city compared to these global centres,” remarks Nor-Shipping Director Sidsel Norvik, “but it’s punching way above its weight in maritime terms. The city and surrounding regions have a wealth of talented companies, spread across a huge spectrum of disciplines, forming a cluster that is really leading the way in industry developments.
“This is a major draw for our international visitors, participants and exhibitors, all of whom are keen to use Nor-Shipping as a hub to build networks, knowledge and opportunity. With the relevance of our #Future-proof theme, helping people make optimal decisions for what lies ahead, there’s never been a better time to access Oslo’s maritime excellence than 2-6 June 2025. We look forward to seeing the world in Oslo next year!”
Supporting the industry
The LMC report assesses 15,000 maritime cities, benchmarking across 45 indicators. Each city is appraised on the ‘pillars’ of Maritime Technology, Maritime Finance & Law, Attractiveness & Competitiveness, Shipping Centres, and Ports & Logistics.
Oslo will operate as the hub of Nor-Shipping’s social and networking activity, with the main exhibition space in Lillestrøm showcasing the very latest industry innovations, services and partnerships. The five dedicated halls are now more than 85% sold out.
